My Journey with 9 Ingenious Side Gigs during my Days as a Stage Manager

Here’s my attempt to simplify and make the text more conversational:

9 Cool Jobs I took on the Side While Being a Stage Manager

Working in the arts, I learned to always be on the lookout for extra ways to make money, as the path of stage managing is no easy task. From trying to cover living expenses in pricey cities to attempting to save money on the side, my ability to spot side gigs has always come in handy. Here are some of the jobs I took on the side to boost my income:

1. Blogging: My six-year blogging journey has so far earned me around $40,000. It’s fun but it’s not quick cash. The first two years brought in nothing. Despite the hard work, blogging offers freedom and growth opportunities. If I put in more work, I believe I could make this a full-time gig, but I am currently content with the balance I have. If you want to learn more about starting a blog, see my guide on how to start a blog.

2. Substitute Teaching: This job isn’t my favorite but it does put bread on the table. The good thing about it is that you can schedule it around your work. I suggest sticking to either elementary or high school classes based on your preference. I have a guide on how to become a substitute teacher if you are interested.

3. Freelance Writing: It was tricky to get started but it’s been a nice source of income. I started writing for a travel blog and gradually raised my fee to $75-$100 per post. The best part is that you can write at your convenience. Check out this guest post from my friend Jesse about succeeding in freelance writing.

4. eBay: Selling items on eBay can be profitable. Over the years, I’ve made money from selling everything from cute pig figurines to an owl-shaped coin bank. I have a post on how I’ve made money selling on eBay if you want to understand better.

5. Transcription Work: While it can be boring, it provides steady income. Getting faster at it is key to earning more. If you know more than one language, you can make money translating as well. Here’s a post about it if you’re interested.

6. User Testing: User testing can help you earn some extra pocket money. It involves reviewing websites, and it’s easy and quite fun. Here’s a post that guides you on how to get started.

7. Mystery Shopping: You can make a little money while eating at fancy restaurants or trying out nice bars. It may not bring in much, but it’s a great way to enjoy good food without worrying about the cost. You can learn more about it from my post on becoming a mystery shopper.

8. Product Demonstrating: Demonstrating products at places like Whole Foods helps earn a little extra income. It’s simple and straightforward with the help of apps like Pinata. You can learn more from my review of Pinata here.

9. Voice Over Work: This new venture of mine involves providing character voices for radio shows. It’s easy and lucrative considering the time spent.
