Review: “How to Communicate Like a Buddhist” Course
Mel @ brokeGIRLrich / July 29, 2020
I’ve been trying to learn new things during the pandemic, and this course on Facebook, called “How to Communicate Like a Buddhist”, seemed interesting. You see, stage managers like me have to communicate well, just like Buddhists who focus on kind, honest, and helpful communication.

I took the course from DailyOM, a website offering a whole mix of yoga, meditation and self-improvement classes. You pick how much you want to pay for it – I paid $15.

The course lasts 8 weeks. Usually, you start each week with an audio lesson that’s about 10-30 minutes long. The course teaches you to communicate clearly without fear, react sensibly, express yourself so others can understand you, and even be comfortable with silence.

The first week digs into the idea of ‘right speech’ from Buddhism. They had me journaling and reading affirmations, but honestly, I didn’t get much from that first week. But, I did enjoy the thoughts on helpful versus unhelpful speaking.

Second week was about reflecting on my own communication skills. The affirmations felt a bit too “new-agey” to me at first, but I got into them. I started noticing more things that were relevant to the affirmations in my average day.

Week three was about others. It was the most valuable week for me because it showed me how I could improve my interactions with people.

Week four was a bit unclear, the journal prompts were confusing, and I didn’t really like the idea of changing my dress style to improve my communication.

Then, week five discussed silence as part of speech. I usually get along well with silence, but it did teach me how silence can sometimes seem hostile, which was a revelation.

Week six was mainly meditation, something I’d been doing already. Week seven revisited past lessons – I kinda slacked off that week. Week eight had the final audio lesson, more meditation, and some exercises to help with anxiety.

Was the course worth $15 and two months? Not entirely sure. I learned some things, though. If you’re struggling with communication, you might find it more beneficial than I did.
