Looking for ways to network as an introvert? So am I.
As a self-proclaimed introverted blogger, I’m often surprised by my networking abilities. Still, it can be super stressful. Take for example when I found out about a holiday party organized by the Stage Manager’s Association, which I’ve been a member of for ages. At first, I thought, “Perfect! This would be an excellent platform to connect with fellow stage managers since I’m soon quitting my current job.” Yet, the thought of mingling with people I barely know made my stomach churn.
Funny enough, I’d previously volunteered at a Broadway Stage Manager’s Symposium, interacted with the charming folks manning the Stage Manager’s Association desk beside mine, and ended up having a good time. So, why was I still hesitating to attend this meet-up? Was it the nerves? Probably. But it’s normal to find networking events daunting, right?
Despite the fear, I know there’s a lot I can gain from networking. So, I immediately texted my best stage manager buddy to accompany me to the event. I’m intrigued by the power of networking – it’s extraordinary. When I announced my job departure on my blog, a bunch of friends reached out within a day to put me in touch with new potential jobs. Some were not even close pals, just past colleagues, yet they were willing to lend a hand.
I found out that the key to robust networking is consistently doing your job well and leaving a good impression wherever you go – this has a lasting impact. Another tip for us introverts? Volunteer at events, much like that Broadway Stage Manager’s Symposium meet-up I mentioned.
Anyway, I’m now building up the courage to attend this soiree, braving a sea of strangers, and talking about the one thing we all have in common – stage management.
So, how about you? Feel the same about networking? Any suggestions for an introvert like me?
