“Is It Always Bad to Splurge a Little?”
Lately, I’ve been mulling over whether it’s alright to give in to the temptation to splurge every now and then. While I believe in one golden rule for splurging, it can be a bit of a gray area.
Rule Number 1: Only splurge when your pocket allows it!
Mind you, It’s not about choosing the best in quality versus price. Like, I don’t mind paying a few extras for Heinz, instead of any other ketchup. But it’s more about those random days when you want to treat yourself with a luxurious chocolate bar, a cute dress, or a night out with friends without worrying about your bills.
I can’t deny it, a new dress from ModCloth sometimes looks too good to resist!
Is it possible to always plan for these little extras? And is it feasible? At times, the craving just hits you out of the blue.
I for one believe that feeling entitled can lead to major problems. I remember gaining 15 pounds in one year during grad school by rewarding each chapter of a boring research project with a candy bar. Did it dent my wallet? Not much. But it took a toll on my health for sure!
Even today, whenever I go back home to New Jersey to help my mom with a sick family member, I find my Dunkin Donuts’ consumption skyrocketing. My best friend even took me out last weekend for some retail therapy and dinner, and boy, did we splurge! I was shocked when I checked my receipts and ended up returning most of my haul.
However, giving into the urge to splurge can have its brighter sides too. Like when I insisted my thrifty friends to loosen their purse strings a bit on our trip to England. The idea was, if we had already paid to get there, why not explore it properly, even if it meant spending a little extra.
It worked out well when one of my friends decided not to pay for a guided tour. Instead, she borrowed two guidebooks from the library, read them en route, and shared the insights with us.
But then, there was a time when another friend thought we could walk most places, so we didn’t need a weekly subway pass. Turns out, we ended up spending more on individual tickets, wasting more time walking and getting lost!
So, what’s your take on this? Is it okay to splurge occasionally, or should we always resist the temptation? Let me know what you think!
