Hey there! If you’re looking to have some fun in New York City during the summer without spending a penny, you’re in the right place!
First off, let’s head to Brooklyn. I know, I’m usually not a big Brooklyn fan either (no offense, Brooklyn!), but it’s genuinely got some cool stuff worth checking out. Take the Pier 2 at Brooklyn Bridge Park for instance. They’ve got a roller-skating rink by the waterside that gets your spirit up with some lively music. The best part? It’s free if you bring your own skates, else it’s cheaper than a cup of coffee (just $5 or less).
Not so much into roller-skating? No worries. The park’s got basketball and handball courts, shuffleboard, and bocce – they’re top-notch and well-kept. Plus, between June and September, you can join free exercise classes like yoga, dance, pilates, and even ballet!
Sightseeing more your style? Brooklyn Bridge Park won’t disappoint. There are rotating art installations just waiting for your discovery. The current one by Jeppe Hein, “Please Touch the Art,” lets you do just that – touch and interact with the 18 piece sculpture work. On Sundays, you can also join a free tour at 11 AM from April through October, learning about the history of Brooklyn’s waterfront, the park’s sustainable design and its construction.
Are you a classical music enthusiast? Don’t forget to check out the Bargemusic site before your visit for a chance to watch a free classical music concert at the park.
And if you’re willing to get wet, the park lets you kayak for free from June to August. This fun option is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. If that piques your interest, make sure to check out other free kayaking options in Manhattan.
So despite the subway hassle, Brooklyn Bridge Park is totally worth dropping by for a few hours of fun.
Oh, and before I forget, here are two more exciting freebies to explore around NYC during the summer: Free Kayaking and Free Opera (just be sure to verify the Met’s summer schedule).
Have fun!
