Heading to Texas anytime soon? If yes, I’ve got the perfect quirky pitstop for you – the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. And guess what? It’s absolutely free to visit.
Although Texas can be pretty unusual (no offense, Texans!) that’s exactly what makes it so awesome, like the weird roadside attractions it’s known for. Cadillac Ranch is one of my favorites. The really cool part? You’re allowed to spray paint it! To make the most of your visit, grab a $10 can of spray paint from a local Walmart beforehand. Believe me, releasing your inner graffiti artist makes the experience so much more fun!
Quick history lesson: Cadillac Ranch was born in 1974 when a bunch of old Cadillacs were half-buried, nose down. It’s like an outdoor gallery of cars ranging from the 1949 model to the 1963 model. Their angles even match the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Why? Good question – the answer might lie in the realm of deeper art interpretation.
The Ranch is tucked away in a cow pasture along Interstate 40. Look out for it! The land is owned by the family trust of one Stanley Marsh III, a local patron who, after initially calling the project “irrelevant and silly,” decided to support it. My kind of guy!
The best part about Cadillac Ranch is that it offers some great photo ops. You can take fun pictures, absolutely free (unless we count the cost of spray paint). If you can’t make it to the venue, there’s a cool video by Brooks & Dunn that shows it in detail.
Keep your eyes peeled, because you never know what interesting and free stuff you might come across next, especially in Texas. So, how about it? Are you ready to explore?
