Best Money Decisions I’ve Made
Hey there!
Life ain’t always rainbows and sunshine, right? Sometimes it can weigh on you with all its ups and downs, but hey, it’s not all gloomy. We all make some cracks at things that turn out quite well. I’ve made some financial choices over the years that worked out significantly in my favour.
Facing Up to My Student Loans
One of the best decisions I made was tackling my student loans head-on since the start. Yes, they irritated me, but I had a strategy to gradually pay them off, even making extra payments whenever I could. These loans enabled me to study theatre in England with some amazing classmates, a unique experience I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Moreover, these loans were a wake-up call for managing my finances. I never liked the feeling of being in debt, and this drove my future financial decisions to ensure I never end up in a similar situation.
Stock Investments: A Game Changer
I put some of my money in index funds, but what really thrived were my individual stock investments. Yes, index funds are a safer bet, but I went for individual stocks in industries I understood well. It worked out pretty well, improving my net worth considerably over time. And let’s not forget Hillenbrand, Inc. I believe they have significant growth potential especially within the death industry.
Building an Emergency Savings Account
One of my top priorities was creating an emergency savings account. The peace of mind it gave me made it worth it. Moreover, this account ensured I kept up with necessary health check-ups instead of ignoring them due to cost concerns.
After reaching a savings amount of $10,000, this account allowed me to relocate for jobs and even accept positions with initially lower pay that boosted my skills.
Keeping it Simple and Low Maintenance
Some of my favourite pastimes include watching Netflix, playing board games, and hosting friends at home. I love camping and extending the life of my clothes by mending them when required. Furthermore, my emotional bond with my slightly old car led to significant savings.
Overall, my simple lifestyle also contributed to money saved.
Creating a Back-Up Plan
I initiated this blog as a side gig, which I could manage from anywhere in the world. Not only has it helped me learn more about personal finance, but it also led me to an engaging online community of finance bloggers.
As an artist, I know the career can be uncertain, so having backup plans were crucial. I took up different roles such as substitute teaching and theatre technician work to ensure money flow even during tough times.
