Navigating Financial Landscapes: Thriving Through Short-Term And Single-Party Contracts

Budgeting for Brief Solo Projects
Hey there, it’s Mel from brokeGIRLrich! I just wanted to share my thoughts on short-term regional contracts. To me, they’re probably the loneliest kind of gig you can take on.

Here’s why: if you move to a new place, you form a fresh life, make friends, maybe join some clubs. But on these quick one or two-month contracts in another state, you’ll likely be on your own. The local theatre team already has their lives, and you won’t be there long enough to really settle in. Plus, being an introvert doesn’t help!

I’m on my fourth contract like this right now. Although it’s been great spending time in places like Roanoke and Hilton Head, these times can be surprisingly gloomy. Call it the “short-term regional contract blues.”

This time, though, I noticed my tendency to lounge around doing nothing and it’s been bumming me out. So, I thought, “why not set some money aside and have some fun?” Otherwise, I end up spending my time getting takeout and binge-watching Netflix.

Planning for fun has definitely been a mood booster. I made a to-do list of entertaining stuff and forced myself to follow through, almost like creating a checklist similar to my work tasks. The result? It seems like small doses of fun can indeed bring happiness, and it’s kept my gloomy blues at a manageable distance.

Even on free days, keeping busy has worked wonders. In fact, I managed to catch three shows, attend church, and even go skiing!

I know not everyone can set aside cash for fun. Trust me, I’ve had my share of low pay. But with a little creativity, you can find ways to enjoy your time without breaking the bank.

Here’s a mix of free and cheap activities I’ve enjoyed:
1. Attend Sunday morning church services.
2. Take free yoga classes.
3. Go hiking.
4. Visit local monuments and farmers’ markets.

On the cheaper side:
1. Splash at the local pool.
2. Visit quirky roadside attractions like the National Bobblehead Museum.
3. Treat yourself at a local sweets shop.
4. Explore local museums or historical sites.

So, even on a tight budget, a quick Google search can reveal a host of nearly free activities in any city. Here’s to staying sane when you’re on your own in a new city for weeks. How do you guys keep things interesting on short-term gigs?
