“Small Steps in Adulting”
Hey there, it’s Mel… you might know me from Broke Girl Rich. I did something pretty adult-like this week. I went ahead and bought a set of four matching glasses. You might think, “that’s it? Pfft.” But let me tell you, it’s a big step for me.
You see, having matching things has never been a priority for me. My apartment is nice, but the kitchenware? Oh boy, it’s an interesting mix of plastic dishes and mismatched mugs. So, with some friends coming over I thought, why not spruce up the place a bit?
Originally, I hit up the Christmas Tree Shop for a shovel. But then I found myself mesmerized by the idea of making my apartment feel more like home. Which was strange for me, since it’s not something I generally bother with.
But there I was, standing in the shop, realizing I didn’t own enough cups for everyone to have a drink without resorting to mugs. So I took the plunge and paid $12 for a set of matching glasses. I also snagged some matching silverware.
I almost got plates too, but those were more pricey and you know, baby steps. Plus, I’m moving again in July, the thought of packing up all that dishware doesn’t sound fun at all. Shopping without my mom, it’s not the same. We would’ve had fun picking out items together.
Turns out budget-friendly has buddies in laziness and sadness.
The whole experience got me thinking. How much money can one actually spend on home items? It’s shocking how quickly my mind latched onto the idea that I needed more. If it wasn’t for the sheer laziness of not wanting to move a ton of dishes later on, I could have easily spent about $100.
The kitchenware section is another story altogether. All those tools, in so many vibrant colors.. I was almost convinced I needed them, even though I barely cook!
Honestly, the sober, non-shopping-high Mel knows what I truly need is a good skillet and a spatula. That’s enough to whip up my go-to stir fry. If I feel fancy, I add a pan for brisket.
As for baking, I like it. But the cost, the initial cost, mind you, is absurd. For your first-time baking, instead of a $3 brownie from the grocery store, you might end up spending around $95 for all the supplies and pans. Despite the joy it brings, it’s a big financial commitment.
So for now, I’m buying the grocery store brownies.
But listen up friends and family, if I do end up buying that cute house in the woods this summer, I’d appreciate a brownie pan and some vanilla extract as housewarming gifts!
Hit me up with your adult purchases and share your experiences about the bewildering world of kitchen utensils!
