How to Make the Most of Your Daily Allowance
If you’re touring and looking to make your daily allowance stretch further, here are some easy ways to do it. I’ve picked up these techniques from my own experiences of living on an allowance of around $30-$35 per day.
1. **Shop Smart:** Spend a little at the grocery store to save a lot in the long run. The trick is to find cheap food items that you like and can easily pack. For instance, some of my fellows love mac and cheese, while I enjoy tuna salad and crackers. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something you enjoy and it’s non-perishable. This way, you can avoid eating out too often, which can quickly drain your wallet.
2. **Hunt for Freebies:** Use the benefits provided to you while touring. Many hotels offer complimentary breakfast, so make sure you don’t skip that. Often, the venues where you’re performing will also provide snacks, or even meals. Don’t feel shy in bringing along a bit for later!
3. **Bring Tupperware:** It might seem odd, but keep some Tupperware with you. It comes in handy when you want to pack up sandwiches from your free hotel breakfast, leftovers from meals at venues, or even from restaurants where the takeout boxes aren’t very durable.
4. **Leverage Coupons:** Use coupons when you can. Collect some while you’re home between shows and use them at your preferred stops. Look into online platforms where you can buy discounted gift cards for places you frequently eat.
5. **Request Gift Cards:** If you tour frequently, ask for gift cards for the holidays or your birthday. This helps when you’ll be hitting the road and eating at the same places repeatedly. Let your group know about your gift cards too; they won’t want to eat at the same place every time, but they might accommodate your preferences often enough for you to use your gift cards.
These are my suggestions for stretching your daily allowance while on tour. Feel free to share your own tips too!
