Making the Most of Your College Experience
If you’re just starting college or preparing to go, you already know that there are a few things that can make your journey successful. Everyone’s situation is different, but here are some tips to help you out.
Stay Safe Online
When picking a college, check that they’ve got good cybersecurity systems in place. You’re probably used to making smart choices online, but remember to stay safe now that you’re more independent. Be careful about what you post and who you chat with online. Avoid sharing your location through your photos and don’t live-stream your every move. Keep your antivirus software updated and be careful when using public wifi on campus. Run regular scans on your devices to catch any problems early.
Stay Safe In Person
It’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night or when you’re by yourself. Keep safety devices like Flare and Birdie on hand and know how to contact Campus Security. Walk with friends when possible, keep your phone charged, and share your whereabouts with trusted people. Regular check-ins with each other can also be a great way to show you care for each other’s well-being.
Build Your Tribe
In the first few days and weeks of college, there will be tons of opportunities to join clubs, groups, or sports teams. This is a great chance to meet new people and find who you are beyond who you were in high school. Attend social events, take part in study groups, and even consider checking out Greek Life; you might even meet your new best friends there. Try different things, meet different people, and you might be surprised at how much more you learn about your college and fellow students.
Explore Majors
Figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life is a journey, not a straight line. Faculty events are a great place to learn more about different majors. Chat with advisors from various fields to get a better idea of what you could do with certain degrees, whether you’ll need further education, and what career paths are available. Your advisors are a goldmine of information, use their knowledge to help plan your future.
Apply for Financial Aid
Even if you don’t think you’ll qualify, apply for financial aid anyway. Start by filling out the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Then, look at the financial aid your college offers. Keep track of deadlines and mark them on your calendar. If you have questions during the process, you can always ask your high school guidance counselor or your university’s financial aid office.
Enjoy College Life
Make the most of everything college has to offer. Get to know your campus inside out, take care of your safety – both online and offline, and enjoy this new chapter of your life. You’re here to learn, but don’t forget to have fun along the way!
