Line-It App Review
Hello! I’m Mel from brokeGIRLrich, and I bought an iPad a while ago, mainly for work tasks. Initially, it was a little hard getting used to it, but I’ve found it to be a beneficial tool in managing tasks more efficiently.
One app that I stumbled upon was the Line-It app by UrbanByte LLC, available in the Apple App Store for $24.99. It’s designed specifically for stage managers, so it’s pretty limited in terms of accessibility on other platforms, and certainly not great for smaller screens.
Before this, I used TagNotate, an annotation app that stage managers sort of hacked for line notes. But with TagNotate being pulled off the market, I was led to Line-It that was specifically made for line notes.
Now, I’m not going to lie, taking line notes can be a drag, so I was excited to use Line-It. The app did have a few snags initially. Notably, when I imported my annotated script, the app stripped off my notes, which messed up the rehearsal process. I had to resort to my reliable, analogue prompt book and the old school method of typing out line notes.
Despite this hiccup, I gave Line-It another shot with our second production, Dracula. Equipped with the previous experience, I used a printed script for blocking and cues.
The app is genuinely easy to setup and link to Dropbox, which is where I store scripts. It was quite useful to set up different colors for different characters, but I was a bit frustrated by being limited to only five types of notes. It also doesn’t let you add text to the note, which can be a drawback especially for complex instructions.
On a positive note, the marking of the script with boxes or circles was fast and efficient, even though it didn’t give the precision I would have liked. Another significant advantage was how quick it is to generate and send notes post-rehearsals, saving me tons of time.
Ultimately, Line-It is super handy with managing line notes, especially given the speed and ease with which you can work. The app could use some improvements in terms of functionality and customisation features, but it’s decent and surely pays back its cost in time saved.
Curious to know, what’s your go-to method for taking line notes?
