Title: Watch Out for the Travel ‘Danger Zone’
Hi there, friends! So, I want to share something about traveling that I call the ‘Danger Zone’. This isn’t about actual danger, but it could be a real threat… to our wallets!
Traveling is fun, but often costs more than we plan. We budget for tickets and accommodation but what about the hidden costs like eating out more, or buying those irresistible souvenirs? Now here’s where the ‘Danger Zone’ kicks in.
The ‘Danger Zone’ isn’t on your trip, but actually starts 3-5 days before you leave. That’s when the vacation mindset starts to creep in. Already noticed your grocery stocks dwindling? Instead of buying more, we often just decide to eat out… more frequently. How about that quick run to the local store for travel-sized shampoo, and leaving with an additional $25 worth of makeup because – well, you want to look good on your trip!
Trips to the mall become more frequent and unbudgeted outfits get added to the travel luggage. Sounds familiar? Yup, I’ve been there too. Recently, while shopping for a job interview outfit, I found myself justifying unplanned purchases, simply because they were on sale!
Before I knew it, I found myself in the ‘Danger Zone’. Even though I’m aware of it, I still found myself grabbing a takeout meal (I have to admit, the lobster rolls at Luke’s were pretty good!) instead of cooking at home. I knew then I had to be more mindful.
To stay on budget, adding a 10% buffer for unanticipated expenses might be a good idea. But honestly, ‘Danger Zone’ purchases might not fit into this and you’d need to work out another strategy.
Being aware of the ‘Danger Zone’ might be our best defense. Many of these expenses happen without us even realizing it until it’s too late. Another solution could be to include ‘Danger Zone’ purchases in your travel budget. If you know that you’re likely to indulge, plan ahead for it. Allocate money for the extra meals out or the last minute shopping trips. This way, you can enjoy your trip without any guilt!
Also, remember that ‘self-control’ isn’t just a cliche, it’s power! There’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying your trip without the anxiety of overspending. Do you all notice this ‘Danger Zone’ before and after your travels too?
P.S. Also, the ‘Danger Zone’ doesn’t end with the trip. The first thing on the list after any journey is a trip to the grocery – trust me, it’s worth it!
